Like other types of surgical procedures or medication regimens, there are associated risks with abortion that women should be aware of if contemplating this procedure. Depending on the type of abortion you get, please discuss with your doctor the risks that might include:

  • Uterine perforation

  • Cervical damage

  • Scar tissue formation

  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding

  • Infection

What Should I Know Before Considering an Abortion?

Knowing the risks, complications, and side effects is important and should be discussed with your doctor.

Additionally, to help safeguard health and wellness, women should also receive a full physical, give a complete health history, and receive an ultrasound. Doing these things will help ensure what options are available to you and what health impacts could occur.

What Are Mental Health Risks?

The National Library of Medicine states, “...abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.”

While some women may experience relief, they can also become overwhelmed with

feelings of:

  • Sadness

  • Stress

  • Guilt

Lastly, the Mayo Clinic recommends women speak with their trusted providers to receive the answers to questions and concerns, weigh alternatives, and consider the impact abortion may have moving forward.
